OverviewThe Battle of Stalingrad began on July 17, 1942 and lasted until Germany's surrender on February 2, 1943. With casualties of nearly 2 million, it is one of the bloodiest battles in history. Most historians consider it to be the greatest conflict of WWII, as it halted the German advancement into the Soviet Union and it was a major turning point of the war.
On September 3, 1942, the German Sixth Army reached the outskirts of Stalingrad. Germany's advance was stalled in Mid-November due to their shortage of soldiers. On February 2, 1943, the General Paulus (German) finally surrendered with approximately 91, 000 Germans soldiers remaining. |
